The Pros and Cons of Chain Link (Plus Something You Didn't Know)

Fencing is a big investment for any homeowner or business. Chain link fences are a popular option for both residential and commercial property owners. But, like any fencing material, there are both pros and cons for using chain link. In this article, we'll explore some of the pros and cons of using chain link fencing so that you can weigh all of the advantages and disadvantages carefully before deciding if it's the right choice for your needs.

Advantages: Security, Affordability and Durability

A chain link fence can offer a good level of security while also being affordable and durable. It can deter burglars and help keep intruders out of your yard by making it more difficult for trespassers to enter your property. Another advantage of a chain link fence is its affordability. Compared to other types of fences, chain link fences are relatively inexpensive and installation costs are also typically less. Chain link fences are very durable. They can withstand heavy winds and are not susceptible to damage from termites or other pests. They are a great cost effective option for keeping your children or pets secure on your property. This type of fence is also very low-maintenance, meaning you won’t have to spend a lot of time and money keeping it in good condition.

Disadvantages...

There are a few disadvantages to chain link fences. One of the main drawbacks is that they are not as private as other options. This can be an issue if you are trying to create a peaceful and secluded space in your backyard or for your business areas that you want to keep private. Privacy slats can be installed (woven) into the links, but this is not as attractive as other fencing options. They can look industrial and stark, though this is subject to personal preference and with the right color choice it can still complement your home's style. Another downside is that chain link fences can be susceptible to rust and damage over time, though still they last a long time compared to other options. Also consider that if you live in a neighborhood where there is a lot of traffic, chain link does not dampen the noise where as other options may provide a degree of noise reduction.

Something You Didn't Know :)

Not all chain link is the same. It looks the same on the outside, however the wire and piping comes in different gauges and wall thickness. It can be more or less hollow inside, thinner/weaker or thicker/stronger, but still look just like other products and have the same diameter on the outside. There are also different coatings and quality issues to consider that may not be discernible to the untrained eye. For this reason it is a common mistake to think you might be saving money with one option but in fact are just getting an inferior product. Don't be fooled! Ask questions. Hire a professional.
